GRAND TEATRET / GRAND THEATRE

GRAND TEATRET / THE GRAND THEATRE located in Mikkel Bryggers Gade, a small side street off Strøget, is one of the oldest cinemas in Copenhagen, Denmark. The cinema is based in the rear side of the Palace Hotel complex on City Hall Square. It has 6 screens and 326 seats. It’s one of the few arthouse cinemas in Denmark and is currently no. 42 on Time Out’s list of the 50 most beautiful cinemas in the world.

The building designed by Anton Rosen and built between 1907–10 has served as a cinema theater since 1913. In 1923 it was taken over by Esther and Urban Gad and named the Grand Teatret. and is thus one of the oldest cinemas in the capital. Since its establishment, Grand's repertoire has been 'narrow' with an emphasis on quality.

Some of the films are imported to Denmark through Grand's own distribution company, Camera Film, which is represented at the Cannes Film Festival every year.

Grand Teatret also prides itself on championing Scandivanian filmmakers like Thomas Vinterberg, Nicolas Winding Refn and Lukas Moodysson in their early days.
